New School Year

Last school year was an awful year for Gavin. His teacher was a dreadful, crotchety old lady who needed to retire. He didn't respect her and she didn't respect him and they were constantly in battle.  She requested he be separated into different classrooms this year from all his friends. And this year he was, but lucky for Gavin he is resilient and friendly with all people old and new. (We later found out she was asked to leave Europe, so there you go.)

We requested at the end of last year that he be put into a classroom with a more loving teacher who enjoyed teaching to boys with high energy and maybe with a bit of a challenge in his education to keep him on his toes. Our prayers were answered. He was put into Mrs. Thomas 4th and 5th grade multi-age combined class. His first few weeks will be assessed and he will be taught at a level in each subject that fits his needs.

I put him on the bus this morning with kids he's known for the past year and he was content.  He arrived home with a smile and said his day was good. His first point to tell me, "Mrs. Thomas has a no-homework policy."  That will seem to make both our lives easier! We shall see! They also have a week long field trip this year! HOLY COW! She sent an email this afternoon with all the things they did today so we can ask him about them and she gave us her home phone number. That's a great start in my opinion and we have heard nothing but good things about her!

At 9 1/2 years old, he grew an inch taller over summer. He got addicted to watching Netflix shows about fishing and is convinced he "wants to be a pro-fisherman" and that he no longer needs to go to college because it "doesn't take skills." He continued with his drum lessons and has become really great at it, but you nearly have to pull out his fingernails to get him to practice. He can't wait to get back into scouts and be a Webelo this year and he is most excited about the upcoming fishing trip in October.  He no longer plays with toys, but loves to play a game called Ball Tag he and his friends made up. He can still be sweet and kind and my favorite moments are when I can make him laugh and his giggle and sparkling eyes make me laugh at my own joke.  And sometimes gets on my
ever-loving last nerve. I love him for sure! Here's to a new and better year of school!
