Contemplation of the Judgement and Hatred We See in our World

I'm reading Nischala Joy Devi's (one of my teachers of yoga) book The Secret Power of Yoga for the 2nd time with a local book club. It is the sutras translated from the heart of a woman. The sutras traditionally only translated by men, Nischala gives a new perspective, one I can relate to a little more naturally.

In sutra 1.2 She translates Yogah Chitta Vritti Nirodha as "Yoga is the uniting of consciousness in the heart" or rather we must remember that we are Divine beings living a human life. That living in this world we forget where we came from through culture, up-bringing, life experiences, and that pain we endure as being human.

At the end of each sutra, Nischala provides an experience to help you put the sutra into practice. This particular sutra she asks that every time you look into a mirror that you say the words," I am a Divine Being" and see what comes up.

I have been doing this and one day I had a candle lit in the background. The candle reflected it's own light through my eyes. And I realized, all this time, I have been looking into my own eyes and seeing myself, but this experience helped me to see what is reflected in my eyes when I look at others.

If I am looking at a lesbian, a transgender, an atheist, a republican or democrat, an African American, a handicapped person, a child, a horse, a drug addict, a prostitute, they are reflected in the pool of my eyes. The same pool that reflects my own Divine Being. We are all one, we are all Divine Beings that come from the same creation. We are all made of the same stuff, "housed in different containers" searching for our Truth, our purpose.

I hope son, when you read this years from now, that you consider what things in your life have muddled your reflection when you look at others and feel hate or judgement in your heart. You are a Divine Being worthy of love, but most definitely, so are they. Put aside your long held beliefs and open your heart. You are loved, but my love, so are they.
