My Life Purpose
My name is Gavin Cummins. I’m a 17-year-old student at the Alabama School of Cyber Technology and Engineering. I spent the first 14 years of my life as a military child, constantly moving and adapting to new environments. At the time, I didn’t enjoy it, I hated starting over and having to make new friends again and again. But after that, I realized how much I had gained from it. Being in so many different places taught me to be outgoing, adaptable, and confident. Without those experiences, I don’t think I would be the person I am today. Over the years, I’ve developed a unique outlook on life, one I don’t believe many people share. I believe in fully committing yourself to whatever you take on and seeing it through to the end. I believe in always being true to who you are and helping others, no matter what challenges they’re facing. I know I still have so much to learn and discover, both about myself and the world around me, and I never plan to stop pushing to become the best version of myself.
I’ve already begun setting goals for where I want my future to go. I have a passion for cars, and I want to pursue a career that allows me to work with them in some capacity. To achieve that, I plan to attend Auburn University and earn a degree in mechanical engineering. While there, I also hope to join the Air Force ROTC program and commission into the Air Force after graduation. I want to serve my four years and come away with valuable experience, knowledge, and opportunities that will help me grow further.
My biggest motivator in life is the desire to constantly improve myself. I believe that making mistakes and learning from them is the most powerful way to grow. Messing up doesn’t mean failure, it means there’s something new to learn. I also think mistakes make life more meaningful, because what’s life without challenges? The values I hold most dearly are trust and courage. Trusting yourself allows you to make decisions with confidence, knowing you're on the right path. Courage supports that trust, it helps you step into the unknown and take risks. Together, I believe these two values can carry someone through anything. I want to help others see that in themselves too. I want to inspire people to trust who they are and find the courage to keep growing.
Ironically, I didn’t always like Scouts. For a long time, I didn’t see the point. But that changed when I started working on my Eagle Project. I intentionally chose something that challenged me—organizing people and managing logistics—because those were skills I wasn’t very strong in. As I began planning and preparing, everything I had learned over the years in Scouting suddenly became clear. I realized how important those lessons were, and how much they had prepared me for that moment. Through my Eagle Project, I learned that leadership can be rewarding, responsibility gives you purpose, and acts of service leave a lasting impact, not just on others, but on yourself. Scouting taught me that I want to be the kind of person who inspires growth in others. It gave me direction and opened my eyes to the kind of leader I want to become.
As I move forward in life, my goal is to continue becoming the best version of myself. I want to inspire others to pursue self-improvement, whether in big or small ways. I want to dive deeper into my passion for cars and grow as a leader. None of these dreams would have taken shape without the lessons I’ve learned through Scouting. Every challenge, every failure, and every success has helped me grow, and I’m grateful for the people who’ve supported me along the way. I wouldn’t be here without them. I’m excited to see what lies ahead. Be grateful for what you have. Never doubt yourself. And above all, always love yourself.
