To Gavin: For When You Grow Older

Gavin-- as a preschooler you always get upset if your dad and I are having a discussion. There may be a raised voice here and there or an intense conversation. You ask, "Are you fighting?" or say, "Stop fighting." One lesson you may learn from this when you get older is that there is a right and a wrong way to fight. Sure we are all going to have a full out argument from time to time, but it's important to know that every person on this planet was blessed from God with being different; different thoughts, opinions, and choices.  The most important choice is to follow God and be like Jesus; full of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, be faithful, gentle and with self-control. I hope you find that your dad and I teach you that as a human, the choice to act this way isn't always easy, but we will always try and that's all we wish for you. I have come a long way personally since you were born and I will continue to work on it all my days.  Your dad shared his love and appreciation to me in these kind words for my birthday and I hope it gives you an idea of how to live your life in the future:

Your hands that give to those in need
Your heart that loves us in faith and deed
Your voice that speaks your love so sweet
You are an angel gives to us.

Your common cause to help all those
Whether they be friends or family,
in their highs or lows
Your compassion for us so lovingly shows
You are an angel given to us.

How you forget yourself for the service to others
How you treat everyone as sisters and brothers
The extra mile you go as a wife and mother
You are an angel given to us.

Your Christ-like spirit you strive to demonstrate
Your limitless love for God is so great
You are a disciple who strives to walk
so humble and straight
You are an angel given to us.
