Gavin and I just finished reading his first big chapter book together, The Secret Garden. I remembered liking it as a kid but didn't remember the details. Gavin was interested when I told him that some kids find a secret garden and he wanted to hear more. So I took that as an opportunity to try out a chapter book. He loved it! He laid quietly and listened and usually asked for more, even when my throat was too tired to go on. I was very impressed at his questioning what some of the big words meant, some even I wasn't sure of the definition, so I got to explain what a dictionary was. I hope he continues to love to read. I've gotten some suggestions for other good chapter books that I have never read, but next I think we are going to start, "The Wind in the Willows."
