We walked a few dogs, but our favorite dog was so adorable. We walked him a few times. He was a medium to small dog and didn't bark, but would growl if you came near his face, especially at Gavin. Though he never nipped or acted like he would bite. Eventually he warmed to us and stopped growling. Gavin took him for a few laps around the yard and the dog walked him to the parking lot and then wouldn't budge. Gavin called for me to help. The dog of course listened to me and started walking with me back toward the kennel. Then he looked at me with Lady and Tramp eyes as if to say, "Silly human, aren't you going to adopt me? You took me for a walk twice and now you walk me back to the shelter? What is wrong with you human?" I felt terrible, but the dog got a little love that day. Not to mention, Shannon said he would have both our heads if we brought an animal home. In all honesty, once you get rid of all pets and notice how clean your house stays, it's hard to think about cleaning up after another one again someday!
We found that all AL shelters are kill shelters. They tend to kill the ones who are aggressive first and work their way from there by how long they have been at the shelter without adoption. There were so many cats and dogs there, it was terribly sad. But thanks to an organization called Kids Showing Kindness, run by a local military spouse, we were able to touch the hearts of a few sweet animals that day.
I think we will make it a regular occurrence, especially with dad away. Gavin has a soft heart for animals. I know he still says he wants to be an Airman, I wonder if one day he might be a vet?
