I've been gone for another week at training. This time Gavin didn't even ask to talk to me. He has gotten so grown up. He even told his dad that he's used to me being gone and it's the new normal, like when he used to always be gone for work.
I love that life goes on and stuff still gets done when I'm not around. Granted there's always a few extra chores and a dead plant when I get home, but they mostly do great just the two of them.
Gavin took some time to chat with me while he did homework today after school before I jetted off for my night school. He shared that he was going to be the best man in his friend, Corbin's wedding on Thursday. The conversation went something like this:
M: A wedding? How old is Corbin? Isn't he 11?
G: Yeah, he's my best friend, he's 12. He is marrying Anna.
M: Really? During school? Does the teacher know about this? Their parents?
G: No. His parents know they are dating, but he really loves her. So I'm his best man.
SO MANY QUESTIONS
M: Oh. And how do they date? Do they live near each other? See each other at school? Go out after school? They are a little young to be dating.
G: They've gone to the movies with the parents a few rows back.
M: Isn't Corbin's mom in jail? Who does he live with?
G: She just got out of jail. She was selling drugs in her basement. He lives with his stepmom.
That explains it.
M: And what do you do as his best man?
G: I give a speech.
M: And what kinds of things will you say in your speech?
G: I will talk about why I am friends with Corbin and Alex and a few other people.
M: Generally, the best man talks about how he met his friend, why he likes him, and how his new wife is perfect for him and gives well wishes for the happy couple.
G: Oh. Can you give me some more examples for my speech?
He listens for a few more minutes and I pry into a few more questions.
M: Who is marrying them?
G: A priest. It's another girl in our class.
M: Women actually can't be priests. I think you mean Pastor. Women can be pastors.
Wow. They have really thought through these details. I do wonder how much of this is being observed by teachers and adults at the school.
M: Do you have a girlfriend?
G: No. But there are girls I like.
M: Oh really. Why do you like them?
G: Cuz their (whispered just like when he was a toddler) HOT.
M: Is there any other reasons besides (whispered back) HOT?
G: Well they both talk to me and are nice to me.
M: I'm glad you are telling me about all this. Sounds like Thursday is going to be a fun day! Congratulations Corbin and Anna!
This kid is such good entertainment when he isn't talking about video games.
