Awkward Conversations

Yesterday I took matters into my own hands.  Shannon had been delaying the talk about what happens to boy around puberty and I have heard some sad stories from my girlfriends about their boys around this age not knowing what was happening and being super confused.  So I slipped on my big girl panties and had the talk about all things penis.

He sat across the couch from me and listened intently to me using all the scientific proper terms for what would happen to him in the coming future. Some of the words were like chewing on razor blades as they came out of my mouth, but I pulled through.  *Insert dorky mom fist bump here*

Me: "Do you have any questions?"
G: No.
Gavin stares unblinkingly right through me as I drone on.
Me: "I just wanted to talk to you about this before your puberty class at school. I think it is important that it comes from your parents so you aren't surprised or scared when something happens and you haven't been told what your body is doing as you grow....are you listening?"
G: I'm trying not to. I think I would have rather heard about this at school.
Me: I know it's weird...
G: ...listening to your mom talk about this stuff? Um yeah!
Me: Laughing my ass off.

He reaches over lays his head on my shoulder and says, "Mom, I know you said that teenagers don't want to ever hang out with their parents, but I'll hang out with you on the weekends mom."

Oh, well we will see about that boy.  You are only 11. Getting taller and smarter and changing every day before my eyes, needing me around less and less.  For now I'll take the hugs and the funny comments and cherish them until you start to shut the door of your bedroom in my face.
