I was reflecting on my fear of heights and the day we walked across the Highline 179 in Germany. What a day that was. A spectacular day in fall in southern Germany, amazing views and castles, beer and brochen. But I was terrified. Instead of saying "I'll stay and take in the view while you go on ahead," I mounted up and said "let's do this." I held on to the cable the entire length of the bridge, which I thought would never end, and felt it wobbling under my feet as the wind at that elevation and the other sightseers 'rushed' past me. Holes in the grates beneath me revealed just how far up I really was, as cars sped by below on their way to the Alps. You spun around, jumped up and down, and said, "mom, what's the matter?" with no fear of your impending possible plunge to death.
Taking long, slow deep breaths only removing my grip from the cable to
let others pass me, we made it to the other side, you slowed down just for me. With a sigh of relief, I
knew the next step was walking back to the other side where our car
was.
I survived. I lived. I loved the view. I was proud of myself, that I conquered a deep-seated fear, and I had an amazing day. It wasn't until the next day; I awoke with the worse kink in my neck and shoulder from the amount of stress I had carried with me along that cable. But some yoga therapy and some CBD and no regrets. This was one of my favorite memories of Europe and I will carry it with me always.
What will you do to overcome a fear? To conquer what you never though you could?
Be brave. Do things that scare you... but be wise and safe in your choices.
