Broken Bones

Over our cruise to the Caribbean this summer you broke your little pinky finger joint.  We knew there probably wasn't much you could do for it and we thought maybe it was just jammed. We waiting probably 4 weeks before your dad took you for an xray to find it really was broken. You wore a splint for another 4 weeks and had a Dr visit and another xray. The Dr felt you needed surgery to place 3 pins in that little joint for a "fingers crossed" it works. Then another surgery to remove the pins and potentially a 3rd to fuse the joint if it didn't work.

Your dad and I argued greatly as we raised concern about the risks of multiple bouts of anesthesia. We scheduled an appointment for a second opinion with some of the top orthopedists in the country in Birmingham with a hand doctor there.

A few weeks later you were xrayed a 3rd time and that Dr determined no surgery was needed and that either way with or without surgery you could end up with some stiffness.  What a relief to my ears to know that one, you didn't need surgery, and two, your mama was right.

The lesson:  Never blindly trust a white coat. Do your research and ask for the second opinion. Some people claim to be experts but most likely are not.
