The Closing

As I close this book and begin to write my memoir, I re-read the pages of this book, the most important era of my life and see how grateful I am to have written it down.  The number of memories I transcribed that my mind would not have been able to recall otherwise, are priceless. I laughed so many times out loud reading this story of our life.  You have always been so clever and funny.  Many times, I said to your dad while reading it, just how damn smart you have always been.

You have brought so much immense joy in my life.  You are by far, my most important legacy.  As you read this book, I hope you saw just how much I enjoyed your presence and how fulfilling it was to watch you learn about life alongside me.  I know I wasn't perfect, but I am grateful that I wrote it all down to capture the moments when you and I nailed it as mother and son.

I know I've told you this, but once upon a time I had a yoga instructor that told me, as she placed her hands on my body, that she had a vision you and I have been reincarnated in different relationships since the dinosaur era.  I'm sure I looked at her in that moment, like the crazy bitch she was. But I have always thought about that moment.  Being reborn together to teach one another what we need to learn so that our souls can grow.  As much as I love you, dinosaurs were a long damn time ago.  I sure hope we figured it out this time.  If not, I'll see you, again, on the other side!

My next wish for you, is that you continue to discover every day who you are.  It is a lifetime's work. And that one day not long from now, you meet a woman who will cherish you as much as I do.  And that you and she create a life filled with the joy of being a parent.

Lastly, I hope that one of you writes down the joys and memories that this very important job holds and that you carry on this tradition to the next generation.  May you enjoy reading our memories as much as I have. It will, by far, be my favorite book of all time.

You are so loved. We are so proud of you.  Go out and shine.

P.S.

I heard this song for the millionth time, the other day, but it hit me a little differently. I cried my eyes out thinking of you. Your dad just held me while I sobbed, not really knowing at all why I was crying. It seemed the perfect way to close this book for you.

Heart beats fast, colors and promises
How to be brave? How can I love when I'm afraid to fall?
But watching you stand alone
All of my doubt suddenly goes away somehow
One step closer
I have died every day waiting for you
Darling, don't be afraid
I have loved you for a thousand years
I'll love you for a thousand more
Time stands still, beauty in all he is
I will be brave; I will not let anything take away
What's standing in front of me
Every breath, every hour has come to this
One step closer
I have died every day waiting for you
Darling, don't be afraid
I have loved you for a thousand years
I'll love you for a thousand more
And all along, I believed I would find you
Time has brought your heart to me
I have loved you for a thousand years
I'll love you for a thousand more
One step closer
One step closer
I have died every day waiting for you
Darling, don't be afraid
I have loved you for a thousand years
I'll love you for a thousand more
And all along, I believed I would find you
Time has brought your heart to me
I have loved you for a thousand years
I'll love you for a thousand more
