Gavin Gets Glasses

I took Gavin to an eye appointment just out of curiosity and because the insurance pays for it. Come to find out Gavin is almost totally using his right eye to read and his left side has been lazy and not developing the correct musculature. So the poor boy needs glasses.

I spent a good bit wondering how I never noticed this, his using the right eye to see. I felt a combination of guilt, failure, and disappointment in myself. All my fears rushed forth. How much will this cost? Will kids make fun of him? Will he rough house and break them or lose these expensive pieces of glass? Will he even wear them? Will he get headaches? Then I wondered if I would be as blind as I am now if my parents had taken me to the eye doctor at age five, versus after I had a huge problem that affected my schoolwork. We spend so many hours inside our imagination dreaming up things that never come to play. But hindsight is 20/20 or so the saying goes and eyesight in our family is obviously not 20/20.

All I can hope for is that he is able to correct his issue in the next few years of eye development and not have to wear glasses his whole life. And so far, he shows none of these fears that encountered my mind in the first 5 minutes at the eye doctor. He really could care less. It's just another thing he puts on each day, like the simplicity of brushing his teeth.  Is it possible I could love this kid more? Is it possible that I could be more like him, because I sure would like to be!

Now that he's had them for a few days and adjusted to them his confidence hasn't failed. He said, "I look in the mirror and I look good." And he does!
