Shift Your Perspective

On a particularly challenging day, Dad and I sat on the porch eating our lunch and watching the small world of ants pulling a huge -to their world, piece of birdseed to their nest. We watched two ants struggle to pull the piece over the cement. They had already moved it so far, with endless terrain left to go. But they never gave up or surrendered, nope, winter is coming. One would run ahead and scout out the best path, removing blades of grass that the lawn mower had vomited on our cement porch out of the way, periodically deciding they could be easily climbed over instead of removed. The scout would then run back and help the one left behind pulling the load to get it a little further. They repeated this process from miles in their little world.

A few moments and some conversation later, we look down only to find the birdseed and the ants have made it safely into the grass with an uncertain amount of distance to go before they reach home.
Small yet determined. Hard workers those little ones. Reminds me of us. Working day and night to make the house a home. All the tasks and duties and the work left to accomplish around us can seem overwhelming. Yet in the words of Matt Haig, "Our external circumstances don't need to change in order for our perspective to change." With a little rest to pause and simply be present. It made me think, it's good to be prepared but it's also good sometimes to step outside the chaos and just enjoy the moment. One moment, one step at a time is a lot less of a drag, for after all blessings abound around each one of us when we change our perspective.
