Sounds of Home

Today Gavin and I listened to an old tape I found going through my box of keepsakes. It was a tape of me when I was probably two years old being coerced by my mom (as moms do) to talk and sing into a mike and capture these adorable moments forever. The first sound was my Grandma Hirt. For just a second, I heard her voice again like she was in the room. For one moment I was there with her again. Man it has been a long time and I sure do miss her. But, today Gavin got to hear her voice too. Recordings of our family and our babies are so precious. I cry every time I watch one of Gavin's videos from just a few short years ago. That high pitched, lispy, sweet sound as he learned to talk... and talk a lot he did! (and does)!

On this tape, I heard my Grandpa Hirt also. He was asking me to identify letters in the alphabet. He laughed and sounded so joyous. My mom still had the same dry cough she has today her voice hasn't changed a bit. And my dad laughed his full belly laugh in the background and blew his nose on his handkerchief.  I could only hear the voices, but the tape drew me back in time, like nothing has changed, and no one grows old.

Who knew that one precious plastic tape with magnetically coated strips that wind around two spools would transport me back through time this rainy afternoon, bringing my own son with me.

Record those moments in history and keep them safe to look back on. You won't regret it. You'll be so grateful for them when your memory fails you or for these moments that are filed away into an old cabinet in the back of your brain, dusty and forgotten.
