Our original plan was to get away to the beach this weekend, but the weather wasn't going to be warm enough so we went with the flow and changed our plans. And it turned out to be the perfect all American family weekend.
Friday night we put Gavin to bed early and I prepared a home cooked meal for the two of us for a little "in-house" date night. Menu was baked sole http://southernfood.about.com/od/flounderrecipes/r/bl30108c.htm with sauteed asparagus and baked sweet potato. I offered to dress up, but thankfully Shannon said, "nah let's wear our pajamas." Just one reason I love that man. He cleaned up after our delicious, quiet conversation, candlelit dinner. That night there was no, "Gavin eat! Gavin sit down. Gavin finish up." It was just... nice. Afterwards we watched a hilarious comedy. The perfect Friday night at home.
Saturday we went to a local you pick it farm and picked two buckets of strawberries. I could have picked for hours. They were plump, juicy, and some almost as big as a small apple. Best of all they hadn't been sprayed with pesticides just yet! Being in the country and reeping the literal fruits of (in this case) someone else's labor. Nothing better! That afternoon we had a BBQ with some close friends. Breaking bread (or in my case, lettuce) and roasting marshmallows (in my case, a small glass of red wine... divine) over a warm Hickory smelling fire. Another phenomenal night.
Sunday morning gathering together on our pew in church, taking the sacred Eucharist, and then gathering with fellow Catholics over Bible Study is a refreshing start to a day of rest. We went for a family bike ride through the neighborhood, no "I'm tired or I'm bored" just a sweet and leisurely ride. Then all three of us walked 9 holes of golf. I even played all 9 and for me, didn't play too shabby! Gavin stripped off his shoes and went barefoot on the cool grass and didn't complain once about the walk. The weather was perfect. Lastly, we enjoyed a nice quiet dinner of pork tenderloin, brussel sprouts, and broccoli outside as the sun set behind the neighbors house.
Amongst the daily monotony, outside the weeks most recent worldly tragedy's, it's weekends like these that make me think that sometimes there are moments where you can experience Heaven on earth. And for those moments I am eternally grateful.
